Review by Karen Anderson

Versailles was started by a female singer/song writer/musician that goes by the same name. With the help of some friends who play various instruments, Versailles has made this debut album called Live Your Life.

Versailles, the person, has a light, somewhat high pitched voice that has the potential to be completely awesome. In a traditional sense that is. Unfortunately the vocal style stays pretty much the same though out the CD, making the songs sound the same after a while. It is also hard to understand the lyrics, especially with the way the vocals were recorded – giving them a sort of echoing quality.

The lyrics are vague and the singing deprives them of any depth the listener might get out of them. A lot of the songs, on the surface, are like stories of a kind of fantasy world. They have a sense of loss and regret about them though for the most part the singing sounds hopeful. Versailles touches on the surface of some things, but needs to dig deeper and go more in depth with subjects to bring us closer so we can get lost in the meaning of the songs.

The music is basically a combination of goth/pop and techno with a bit of an industrial pull. All of the songs are played at a pretty slow pace, which not only gets old but makes me sleepy. Some of the songs sound more like lullabies with a combination of both acoustic guitar and soft synthetic sounds, while others have dark overtones, or lively (as lively as this CD get) beats to change it up. Some of the songs are musically shallow and could use more layers.
