Review by Brian McLean
The Great Kat, the School of Juilliard graduate, classically trained Grand Violinist Virtuoso, and guitar shredder, has released a DVD title Extreme Guitar Shred through TPR Music.
The DVD features six videos of classical music compositions done Kat’s way. It is nothing but pure shred on the six-string and her classical instrument of choice, the violin.
Each video has a theme of its own. The themes range from guitar and violin virtuoso in “Sick Torture Chamber” to a mini shredding opera uncomfortably titled “Castration” to live footage with possessed slaves worshipping the mighty Kat to “Dominatrix” featuring Kat as the dominant species to “War”, Kat’s take and interpretation of the 9/11 attacks, the World Trade Center Collapse, and horrid scenes from concentration camps. Needless to say there’s a wide range of themes and topics on the brief 15 minute DVD.
There’s no denying it, Kat’s guitar work on the fret board dazzles and her speed is impressive, but the playing is lacking passion. A classically trained musician should showcase not only the ability to shred, but also the ability to play with pure passion. Unfortunately, there’s no passionate playing in any of the videos, not even a hint. Only so much shredding can be tolerated and the Extreme Guitar Shred title stays true to the content.
The quick editing cuts, strobes, graphics and special effects like blood enhance Kat’s shredding, but it becomes dizzying and annoying after several minutes.
For the curious music fan that would like to see and learn more about the guitar-shredding creature name Kat, the DVD would be a nice addition to the collection. For the speed guitar freaks of the music world whether familiar with Kat or not, it’s a must have.
