Review by Brian McLean
Rhapsody has released their first live album titled Live in Canada 2005 – The Dark Secret recorded during their North American summer Tour in 2005 while touring in support of their Symphony of Enchanted Lands II – The Dark Secret release.
The single audio disc captures the Italian based symphonic metal band in flawless form for their 11-song set from the majestic introduction leading into “Unholy Warcry” through the “Grand Finale” an hour later.
There’s a special limited edition release that features the entire show as well as a bonus DVD with behind the scene footage of the band and interviews with band members.
It’s good to see a band of Rhapsody’s caliber releasing such a tight performance as a live album along with the level of fan interaction captured. The live material gives proof for the level of musicianship from every member in the band and what has been previously released studio-wise just isn’t magic created with the twist of knobs.
The full-color insert for the disc should be fully dedicated to the band and all that is Rhaposdy and not use four panels, specifically the center to promote other bands on Magic Circle, that’s what an individual separate insert is for.
It takes away from the band and the wasted space could be utilized in a different manner with additional photos or informative bits of the band. This is Rhapsody’s first live album and everything inside should reflect and be dedicated to that.
Any track on the disc whether “The Village of the Dwarves,” “Erian’s Mystical Rhymes” or “Lamento Eroico” will convert the Rhapsody first timer into a faithful follower. This disc bleeds musicianship for those who appreciate it.
Other than that, Live in Canada – The Dark Secret is the perfect first time Rhapsody purchase.
