Review by Rachel Jablonski
Last Conservative is the last “conservative” rock band we have covered in quite awhile. With no over the edge distortion, no hardcore screams or growls, the band from Buffalo, NY simply submits a refreshing pop/rock sound that has been unknowingly absent from my metal prone ears for far too long. One of the first bands to be signed to Good Charamel Records, a brand new label created by Robby Takas of the Goo Goo Dolls, Last Conservative parallels the newness of the label through a display of fresh, yet experienced sound.
Unsteady musical effects and atypical instrumentation occasionally intertwined set well upon the feel good rock foundation of On to the Next One. The musical recipe might be best described as a blend of Toad the Wet Sprocket, a spoonful of Our Lady Peace, a light, light sprinkle of Radiohead, and a cup of Dashboard Confessional. Perhaps the best way to exemplify this preposterous sounding mix is through “On to the Next One” the first radio single and title track of the album.
The track begins with a slight Radiohead-like riff and a touch of Thom Yorke spliced with Our Lady Peace and Dashboard Confessional sounding vocals. Sound effects are utilized in the track adding complexity to the song. The track has a dark, desperate feel, not nearly as light in mood as are other tracks on the album. "Can’t Get Away From You” is a clear contrast with an upbeat feel, light guitars, soft vocals, and the like. A promising album, On the Next One effectively creates a perfected sound I have not heard pulled off as well in quite some time.
