Review by Stephen Pedicino

It’s been two years since The Black Halo and loyal fans such as I have hungered for that tasty Kamelot Kreme for some time now. There just one of those bands who get bigger and more refined with every release. Can Kamelot maintain they’re upward path?

A minute-long classical intro blends into the opening track, “Rule the World.” Kamelot takes a different approach here, making their first track more mid-tempo and progressive. Its still very catchy and an interesting way to start the album. A plethora of instruments are used, showing that Kamelot have expanded their sound to even greater heights. The title track is perhaps the most energetic on the album. The opening reminds me of the song, “Soul Society” off their last album. It’s a very typical Kamelot song (a good thing!) I’m glad they chose it for the video since it represents them well.

“Blucher” is a very symphonic tune. Having a nice sing-along chorus and catchy beat, it’s easily a winner. It features brilliant backup vocals from none other than the beautiful Simone Simones. I’ll resist the temptation to go into a two page soliloquy about her, and continue my review……………………………..okay……….get it together Steve!!! *slaps self*

The song “Love you to Death” resembles a H.I.M. title just a little too closely for me. Good song, but a bit sappy. By this point I began to crave more speed and power from these melodic power-metallers. Four of the first five songs are mid-tempo. All the songs are well-written, but part of Kamelot’s majesty is speed.

That speed finally returns by the time of “Mourning Star” and reaches it’s apex with “Silence of the Darkness.” Both songs are great, with the latter probably being the catchiest off the album. “Eden Echo” also cracks that Kamelot whip that so many of us have a limitless appetite for. All great songs!!!

Overall, this is the most progressive album from Kamelot. The songs structures are great and have tremendous orchestral depth. Roy Khan’s voice seems better than ever and are a definite highlight on the album. Unfortunately, some fans will be disappointed by the lack of speed and power that have reigned so prevalently on previous Kamelot albums. The special edition comes with a DVD featuring the video for “Ghost Opera.” Its absolutely amazing, featuring some of the best cinematography I’ve ever seem in a metal video. A short feature titled, “The Making of Ghost Opera”, is also included. Both are treats for Kamelot fans.
