Review by Brian McLean

Scientifically speaking water and oil don’t mix together. Musically speaking, music styles from the north and south such as Springsteen and Skynyrd would appear not to mix together either. But the Syracuse-based band Brand New Sin has shattered that notion with Recipe For Disaster, the band’s first release on Century Media Records but second release over all.

Brandishing thirteen southern influenced “kick ass rock and roll” tracks, Recipe for Disaster gives the listener a recipe for a good time and it all starts with the sound of several beer cans being popped open.

Throughout the whole disc the five piece Brand New Sin offers nothing but gritty guitar riff driven hard rock with rough, soulful, from the gut vocals and a solid rhythm section, ideal for the all American blue collar hard rock fans.

Stronger cuts for the listener will be the disc opener “Arrival,” followed by “The Loaner” along with “Black and Blue,” the first video for the release, “Another Reason,” “Days are Numbered,” which has a hint of a Motorhead feel, “Freight Train” and “Dead Man Walking.” These are the harder offerings on Recipe for Disaster.

Then there will be songs like “Brown Street Betty,” “Running Alone,” “Vicious Cycles,” “Once in a Lifetime,” the short instrumental “Gulch,” and disc closer “Wyoming.”

These tracks give evidence to the variety Brand New Sin is capable of. The songs are at a toned down pace with acoustic guitars but done in the Brand New Sin way. The slower songs still rock no matter what the tempo.

For the fans that appreciate a variety of hard rock like Black Label Society, Black Sabbath, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Corrosion of Comformity, and Motorhead, this New York based band should be on the to be added list immediately.

With the variety of songwriting on Recipe for Disaster, Brand New Sin will quickly earn a solid ranking in the hard rock category. Sometimes fans need a break from the non-stop harder stuff and Recipe for Disaster will be one of those discs.
