Interview by Rachel Jablonski
Rachel: If you ask most people what style of music comes to mind when they think of Louisiana, they would probably say jazz and blues. I have that notion as well and in addition I think of heavy metal bands like Goatwhore, Down, and Acid Bath. But Another Big Machine is proving that pop/rock is also fluent in the state. How did you initially fit into the scene and gain exposure in Baton Rouge, Louisiana?
Justin: We used to play a lot of early 90's covers when we started. Our early originals had that same sound so I think people caught on to what we were trying to do with our music.
Rachel: You formed as a band in 2003 when you were just out of high school and now, in 2008, have a debut album coming out on Rising Storm records. What has your journey been like musically these past 5 years to get you to where you are now?
Justin: We toured and played a bunch of shows in the beginning. We would go out for a while and then come home and write, record, and hit the road again. It has been a great journey so far. We've made records in Nashville, New Orleans, and Los Angeles, and made lots of friends along the way. I've met and worked with a lot of people that have influenced me through out life. I can say it's been a blessing.
Rachel: Your sound is very clean, clear-cut, and easy to listen to – it's quite catchy and memorable. What is your first single from the album and why did you choose that particular song?
Justin: The first single is "Brand New Kind of Love." It's a real versatile song and I think people will relate to it in a huge way.
Rachel: Your bio mentions that you are ready to be sharing the radio airwaves with bands like Daughtry. Since I'm a fan of American Idol, where Daughtry first gained exposure, I have to ask. Do you watch American Idol? If so, who do you like in Season 7 at this point and why? If the judges were judging your vocals how do you think they would critique you?
Justin: Yes I do watch. I don't have a favorite at the moment because there is so much talent. If the judges were judging me I have no idea what they would say. I would love to sing in front of them just to see what they would say.
Rachel: Where did the name Another Big Machine come from?
Justin: It used to be a song title before we where ABM. ABM is an over powering force that eventually takes over.
Rachel: The album doesn't come out until June 24th, so what are your plans until then? What tour plans do you have coming up?
Justin: Spending time with family is a big thing before touring. You never know how long you will be out on the road. Right now Dane and I are gearing up for a radio tour. We will be promoting the songs "Brand New Kind of Love" and "Sedated."
Rachel: Anything else you want talk about?
Justin: I would like to thank you guys for the interview and all of our fans out there. Our record will be in stores on June 24th. We hope you enjoy. For more information, please check our myspace page. www.myspace.com/anotherbigmachine. Thanks!!!
